چکیده

The paper is concerned with experimental investigations and numerical simulations of immiscible flows in microchannels in the presence of interfacial surface tension. The aim of the present study is to model the unsteady dynamics of the vortical structures and interface shape in the Y-branching geometries with square cross-sections. The tested fluids are Newtonian and weakly elastic polyacrylamide solutions in water (modelled as shear thinning Carreau–Yasuda fluids). The experiments used specially designed configurations based on optical and confocal microscopic devices; PIV measurements of the velocity distributions and direct visualizations of the interface are obtained. The simulations performed with the VOF solver implemented in the FLUENT code are validated by experiments for small and medium Reynolds numbers (0.1 < Re < 200). The numerical solutions offer a detailed description of the vortices formation in the vicinity of the interface, phenomena which directly influence the mixing and diffusion processes within the micro-geometry here investigated. 2010 Elsevier Inc. Simulating the dynamic behavior of immiscible binary fluids in three-dimensional chemically patterned microchannels.

Using computer simulations, we investigate the behavior of an immiscible binary AB fluid that is driven to flow through a microchannel, which is decorated with a checkerboard pattern of chemically distinct A- and B-like patches on the top and bottom walls. We isolate conditions where the coupling between the imposed flow field and thermodynamic interactions yields a rich interfacial behavior be...

Investigation of electrokinetic mixing in 3D non-homogenous microchannels

A numerical study of 3D electrokinetic flows through micromixers was performed. The micromixers considered here consisted of heterogeneous rectangular microchannels with prescribed patterns of zeta-potential at their walls. Numerical simulation of electroosmotic flows within heterogeneous channels requires solution of the Navier-Stokes, Ernest-Plank and species concentration equations. It is kn...

Using patterned substrates to promote mixing in microchannels.

Using a lattice Boltzmann model for fluid dynamics, we investigate the flow and phase behavior of a binary fluid moving over a patterned substrate within a microchannel. The binary fluid consists of two immiscible components, A and B, and this liquid is subjected to a Poiseuille flow. The substrate is decorated with a checkerboard pattern of A- and B-like patches. Through a coupling of hydrodyn...

Rapid mixing using two-phase hydraulic focusing in microchannels.

Rapid mixing is important in biomedical analysis. In this study, rapid mixing is obtained through two-phase hydraulic focusing in microchannels. Two mixing streams are focused by two sheath streams. Assuming a laminar flow in the channel, the spreading behavior of the two immiscible fluids is modeled and solved analytically. The results show that both viscosity ratio and flow rate ratio between...

Slip Velocity in Flow and Heat Transfer of Non-newtonian Fluids in Microchannels

The steady-state fully-developed laminar flow of non-Newtonian power-law fluids is examined in a circular microchannel with slip boundary condition and under an imposed constant wall heat flux. Effects of slip as well as the hydrodynamic and thermal key parameters on heat transfer and entropy generation are investigated. The results reveal that increasing the Brinkman number and the flow behavi...
